Before they say the norms I will go over the Success Criteria. A Success Criteria are things they need to know or do in order to be successful at the activity. I tell the students if they have been with me last or longer they have to say the norms and do the motions. If they are new to our school, they have to just do the motions, but can say the words if they like. I do have a PowerPoint running that has the words to all the norms.
I will go over the Success Criteria. I will have them "Mirror" (say what I say, do what I do) to review the definition of a steady beat. I will model how to say your name to a steady beat. I tell the students that we need to try to keep the beat moving and try not to have any hesitations.
In this week's lesson students will sing the song without the teacher. I don't even do the motions with them. I have them sing it a couple of times. Then I open it up for solo singing. I only have those who want to sing a solo take a turn.
Last week students worked on learning all about four sixteenth notes. In this week's lesson we review what we learned last week. I call student up to the board to drag the correct answer to the correct line. I call one student per problem. The first one the students had to give the real name of the note, the second on they had to give the syllable sound, the third one they had to identify it as stick notation, the rest of them they had to identify which note part the purple arrow was pointing to.
Last week we worked on notating the song. To make sure they have and really understand, I had them do it again. I just called on different students.
I will call on students to help tell me what notes will go above the words. They will do one whole line.
Once we finish notating the song. We will read it using rhythm syllables.
To end the lesson I use Exit Tickets. I make them on half sheets and then I put them in half page sheet protectors (can get them on amazon). Students use a dry erase marker. As they get their material and find a spot I play some music. In this exit ticket they have to fill in the rhythm. When they are done they come and see me and I will take a picture of their work. Then the students erase their answers and lines up. I make a folder for each class and I put their photos into the correct class folder. To grade them I just view them as a gallery and score their grade into the ipad app iDoceo.
