Before they say the norms I will go over the Success Criteria. A Success Criteria are things they need to know or do in order to be successful at the activity. I tell the students if they have been with me last or longer they have to say the norms and do the motions. If they are new to our school, they have to just do the motions, but can say the words if they like. I do have a PowerPoint running that has the words to all the norms.
I will go over the Success Criteria. I will have them "Mirror" (say what I say, do what I do) to review the definition of a steady beat. I will model how to say your name to a steady beat. I tell the students that we need to try to keep the beat moving and try not to have any hesitations.
In this week's lesson I will sing the song while doing the motions. I will sing the song 3 times. Students are just doing the motions. I will stop if someone starts to sing with me and remind them that it is my turn. I will sing it once and then the class will sing it. If they struggle, I will sing it again and then let them try again. Once they get it, they will sing it two times.
I do a beat unit with all grade levels. This week they will be watching the Quaver Beat episode. 1st graders only watch about 7 minutes of the video. I stop it after they discuss strong and weak beats (the cartoon clips).
In this week's lesson students will be working on tracking the beat. Before we begin I will read the target to them and then I will model what it looks like. We discuss how you go from left to right and when it's time to go to the next line, you start back on the left side.
Next I go over how they will be getting their own beat chart. They need to find a spot on the floor. As they say the poem "Bee Bee Bumblebee" they need to tap the beehives. I will say the poem for the first two times. Then I have them do it 3-4 times without me. As they are doing this, I walk around the room and assess who is able to track the beat and who needs more practice.
