This week was rough for 2nd graders. I am really trying to make sure that students follow my expectations. 2nd graders are struggle to come into my room for some reason. Their biggest problem is they tend to want to walk on the hearts like stepping stones instead of walking around. I use sitspots on my floor which are 2" pieces of velcro. I purchased the heart shaped ones and I made a circle with them. I like them because they mark their spots in a circle. The problem is as the walk in we make a circle. Since they tend to walk on the hearts like stepping stones it is causing the line not to move and then not everyone can get in. 2nd graders also like to tell each other what to do so instead of singing the song they are arguing with each other on who is suppose to move. We had to practice walking "around" the hearts and not on them. Then they had to go back out into the hallway and try it again. They only had to do this once, but it took about 15 minutes of class time to learn how to do it.
I will go over the Success Criteria. I will have them "Mirror" (say what I say, do what I do) to review the definition of a steady beat. I will model how to say your name to a steady beat. I tell the students that we need to try to keep the beat moving and try not to have any hesitations.
In this week's lesson I will sing the song while doing the motions. I will sing the song 1 time. Students are just doing the motions. I will stop if someone starts to sing with me and remind them that it is my turn. After I sing it once, the students will sing it one time. If they can't do, I will sing the song again and let them try again.
This week students will be watching the Quaver Beat episode. I will pause the video throughout to discuss the key concepts. This is all we got done today since coming into music took so long. I didn't want to give up the time, but I had to set the bar that I still expect them to come in correctly and the five norms still apply.
