Before they say the norms I will go over the Success Criteria. A Success Criteria are things they need to know or do in order to be successful at the activity. I tell the students if they have been with me last or longer they have to say the norms and do the motions. If they are new to our school, they have to just do the motions, but can say the words if they like. I do have a PowerPoint running that has the words to all the norms.
I will go over the Success Criteria. I will have them "Mirror" (say what I say, do what I do) to review the definition of a steady beat. I will model how to say your name to a steady beat. I tell the students that we need to try to keep the beat moving and try not to have any hesitations.
In this week's lesson I will sing the song while doing the motions. I will sing the song 1 time. Students are just doing the motions. I will stop if someone starts to sing with me and remind them that it is my turn. After I sing it once, the students will sing it one time. If they can't do, I will sing the song again and let them try again.
This week students will be watching the Quaver Beat episode. I will pause the video throughout to discuss the key concepts.
This week we are working on four sixteenth notes. Before we work on notating the rhythm of the song, I have the students fill out a graphic organizer to help learn about all the parts and characteristics of the new note.
Now that they know what four sixteenth notes we can work on notating the rhythm to Golden Ring Around the Susan Girl.
I will call on students to help tell me what notes will go above the words. They will do one whole line.
Once we finish notating the song. We will read it using rhythm syllables.
